How an internship should be

I always thought about how I could combine my love for sport with my recent business degree studies and when a friend introduced me to Brandwave I instantly knew it was the company for me.
Built upon an unrelenting passion for sport, working with some of the biggest brands in the industry, and located on the coast (a factor that was really attractive for me, being from Pembrokeshire, West Wales) – Brandwave has it all.

So picture this (not too hard, picture of the day below), it’s my first week at Brandwave and at the end of day one I had been given a brand new O’Neill winter wetsuit, and it wasn’t long before I had a chance to use it as surf was up and this meant a Wednesday lunchtime team surf outing. And if this wasn’t enough to make it the coolest first week in a role, I found out that I would be going with the team to the biggest action sport and outdoor tradeshow in the world, ISPO Munich. What an opportunity to network for Brandwave with every sporting brand I had grown up with – I felt like a big kid in a sweet shop. But this was not only a special trip for me it was very significant for Brandwave as it marked the opening of the company’s international office in Munich – this was of course celebrated in style in what I came to realise was second nature for Brandwave.

Fortunately I didn’t disgrace myself too much as I was later invited to go on the annual Brandwave team holiday, this year it was a surf trip to Ireland. I soon realised that Brandwave wasn’t quite how I imagined office work to be and they definitely did things in their own unique way.

My Experiences

With Brandwave being a full-service marketing agency, covering strategic, creative and digital work it gave me a huge breadth of varied opportunities that I’m sure will be invaluable for my future career and me.

Right from the beginning I was given the opportunity to work on exciting projects with huge brands within the sports industry. Some of the stand out experiences I had were my days working with the creative team on film projects with companies such as adidas, Reebok, Icebreaker and the RNLI – I know I’m name dropping but who wouldn’t. I did not expect to have such opportunities in an area of marketing that I hadn’t considered before but it was these first hand experiences that proved to be some of my most enjoyable and memorable of my internship.

The Team

As well as the incredible opportunities I had whilst interning with Brandwave, the thing that made the experience so enjoyable and special was the Brandwave Team. From day one I was welcomed into the Brandwave family, and was given guidance and the opportunity to learn from the best.  And although it was fast-paced and a lot of work at times, having such a supportive team in the office made for such a great working environment.

Location

Brandwave’s location once again makes it very different to other ‘great’ businesses / marketing agencies. Based on the South East coast in the small seaside village of East Wittering, Brandwave is located in an area that feeds the desire of the team’s passion for watersports and the outdoors, giving full endorsement to the companies strapline, ‘We know your target market because we are your target market’ true.

To summarise my fantastic experience, here are my top 5 learnings from my time working at Brandwave:

1) No matter your role in an agency, everyone is creative

2) The importance of having an eye for detail

3) How to build and manage successful relationships

4) How to use the Adobe suite of programs

5) An appreciation and knowledge of the vast amount of operating programmes and procedures required for a marketing agency to function efficiently
