For the second instalment of the Brandwave Brand Test, we tested a range of Clif Bar products. Account Executives, Dulcie Davies and Hugh Cadge, review the products over a weekend packed full of activities.

Before heading down to Folkestone for the Super 6s Indoor Hockey Championships, I filled my bag to the brim with the Clif Bar products. With 5 tough games on our weekend schedule I knew I was going to need all the energy I could get. Already familiar with many of the traditional Clif Bar flavours, I was keen to branch out and try the Bloks energy chews and Builder’s protein bar.

With one win and a draw under our belts after day one, it was all about rest and recovery. With the 15-60 minute refuel window in mind (the period of time following a workout that your muscles are primed to receive fuel and start repairing any workout damages), I tucked into the Chocolate Mint Builder’s bar. Usually deterred by dense and chewy protein bars that leave your jaw aching and an odd aftertaste in your mouth, this bar was extremely moreish, easy to chew, and satisfyingly filling. As a vegetarian, I was also impressed to see it was vegan friendly.

Day two of the tournament and three games to go, I was in need of an energy boost after a light hotel breakfast. I fished out my Tropical Punch flavoured Bloks energy chews and ate 3 squares, each containing a heavy dose of caffeine. As the opposition were wiping the sleepy dust from their eyes, I was bouncing off the walls ready for action. The Bloks chews provided that quick hit of energy, which could be replicated in stages throughout the long day. The only problem was stopping myself eating the entire pack because they are just so mouth-wateringly delicious. Thanks to the energy that these little Bloks contain, Sevenoaks Hockey Club secured two more wins and another draw to put us in a pole position for a league promotion.

Hugh Cadge was next to try out Clif’s nutrition products:

Whilst training for the Bath Half with a marathon to follow, I opted to test the energy shots. Having never tried any of these products before and previously finding energy gels to be unpleasant and hard to swallow, I was pretty skeptical about this test. Biting the bullet, I headed out into the rain on a typically lethargic Monday lunchtime, it wasn’t long before I was lacking in energy and needing a boost. Much to my surprise it was nothing like anything I had tried; tasty, easy to digest (with a swig of water) and very quickly provided the energy I need to complete the last few kilometres of my route.

For those new to nutrition and energy products, we would recommend the Clif Bar range. The variety of flavours and palatable textures will have you snacking on them subconsciously during your tea break. Bars and other products available from www.wiggle.co.uk
